Duc, age 6
My mother died when I was four years old, which is when I was diagnosed with HIV. At first, my brother and I continued to live with our father, but he sells and uses drugs and was sent to prison. So we went to live with our grandmother and our uncle and his family. My father is out of prison now, but he has remarried and rents a room with his new wife. He does not visit us much and does nothing to help raise us.
I caught HIV from my mother when I was born. My little brother does not have HIV like me, because mother was able to take medication to stop him getting it too. Two years ago, I had laryngeal cancer, a side effect of HIV and almost died. My grandmother is very old, so it was hard for her to take care of me. She asked VNHIP if they could help and they arranged for my brother and me to go to the Vũng Tàu Centre for Social Protection of Children in Ho Chi Minh City to live. The centre arranges for me see a doctor once a month for a check up and medications, so I am healthy now. We are very happy living at the centre, the staff take really good care of us, there are lots of things to do and many other children to play with. Some of the other children at the centre have HIV too. It helps me a lot to be able to talk to other people who understand how it feels to have a fatal disease.
