Nam Giang
Nam Giang is a remote mountainous region in Quang Nam near the Laotian border. It is a very poor area with a large amount of minority tribes. We first went there in 2010 with a group from Centura Health to hold a 5 day clinic. This was our opportunity to see the main health issues that existed amongst the population. We found that, unlike the majority of Viet Nam that is suffering from developed-country diseases like heart disease, these people were dealing with infections and direct consequences of poor hygiene and poverty. We formulated a plan to return to the area to build capacity of the health workers and improve the general health and well-being of the residents. Our plan is to start with education of the village health workers and selected residents at high risk. We will then work on education of physicians and strengthening the hospital and clinic system. We hope to help the health providers in the area and improve the health of the residents.
