Ngoc, age 13
My name is Ngoc and I am in the grade 7. My mother and father are dead, so my sister and l live with our grandmother and uncle in Da Nang. My grandmother was already old when we came to live with her, but she had to continue to work to raise us. My sister and I help her as much as we can, because she works so hard. When I grow up, I will do my best to earn a lot of money, so that she can stop working and I can look after her.
My sister does not have HIV, but I caught it from my mother when I was born. I am sad because I have a fatal disease, but I am able to school and have friends, so that is good. My Uncle decided that we should not to tell anyone that I have HIV, in case they stop me going to school or worse. I know how to take care of myself and how to protect my friends and family from my disease, but it is hard keeping such a big secret. I am healthy, happy and active because of the good care I receive, so now one suspects that I have HIV. My dream is to one day be a primary school teacher, then I can take care of the little children and become a good person. I enjoy school and work very hard, so that when I grow up I can realize my dream and make my grandmother proud of me.
