Nguyen, age 11
I want to tell you about my family’s situation. Everybody wants to be born and grow up healthy like every normal person. Isn’t that right? Before I was born my father contracted HIV and he died when I was two.
When I started kindergarten the other students’ parents were worried that I would transfer the disease to their children, so I could no longer go. I had to stay home with my mother until I was old enough to go to primary school. When I started primary school I met some of the same people again. They went to see the headmaster and wanted to move their children to a different class, away from me, but the headmaster refused. At break times no one would play with me, I just sat on the bench and watched the other children play happily together. I wished I could play with them too, but I couldn’t. One year passed and I moved to grade 2. Slowly, I began to make some friends and they started to treat me like anyone else. I am now in grade 6 and I have lots of friends. Changing schools was a lot easier this time, as the Viet Nam Health Improvement Project and the Street Centre in Danang’s community education program helped the teachers, students and parents to understand my condition and the risks. I live with my mother, stepfather and younger brother and we are very happy. I am doing well at school and would like to be a researcher when I grow up, so that I can invent helpful things for society.
