Nhat, age 11
My name is Nhat and I live in Phu Thinh in Quang Nam province with my maternal grandparents. I have been living with them since I was little, after both my parents died from HIV.
My grandparents are old and cannot work. We have no other relatives to help us, so they farm rice and pigs to earn money. It is enough for us to survive, but dependent on the seasons and not enough for them to raise me properly. They receive 180,000 VND (9 USD) per month from the government to help care for me, because I am an orphan. My father’s family used to help us, but they stopped when they found out that I have HIV. The Street Children’s Centre in Da Nang asked VNHIP to help us. I was 7 years old, but I was very small and skinny, and had a bad skin infection and severe diarrhea. VNHIP arranged for me to go to Saigon for treatment and I improved a lot. I have been on ART treatment since and am now healthy and feeling well. I am in grade 6 and doing well in school. I love school and my favorite subjects are Art, Maths and English. I work very hard at school, so that I do not betray the expectations of my grandparents. I am very sad because I have HIV, but I will try to overcome it. I worry a lot about the future and how I will earn a living with this fatal disease. I would like to be doctor when I grow up and help people like me, but my grandparents do not have enough money for me to go to extra Maths and English classes.
