Extra classes
The majority of school children in Vietnam attend school on a half-day basis - half the school goes in the morning and the other half in the afternoon. This is because there are not enough teachers and classrooms in Vietnam for all the children to attend school all day.
To make up for the half-day they miss, all children that can afford it attend extra classes at their teacher’s home after school. Extra classes start in grade 1 with 1-2 hours per week of maths, reading and writing. This increases to 3 hours per subject per week for high school students, who most commonly take extra classes in English, maths and sciences. Extra lessons are expensive and cost about 200,000 VND (USD 20) per month, per subject. Children who can’t afford the lessons lose out on two levels, they get behind in their studies and the teacher may treat them less favourably. |
